Why isn’t BBC iPlayer available outside of the UK?
Although BBC content is available in other countries via services like BBC World or BritBox, BBC iPlayer is exclusively available in the UK. That’s because the BBC only purchases broadcast rights for specific regions (Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland). If you try watching anything from abroad, the site will even tell you plainly: “it’s due to rights issues.”
It’s possible to access BBC iPlayer from anywhere using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). However, doing so goes against the platform’s terms of service, and in fact, any VPN use is forbidden. To follow the rules, you’d have to disconnect your VPN, stream your show, and remember to reconnect afterward. It’s all a bit silly, with users effectively asked to compromise their own privacy just to watch EastEnders.
How to unblock BBC iPlayer with a VPN
- Sign up for one of the VPNs above. Download and install the app, then log in. Expected result: you’re shown the VPN’s main page.
- Connect to a British server. Choosing any other location will result in an error – you specifically need a UK IP address. Expected result: the VPN connects in a few seconds.
- Delete cookies for www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer. This removes any old login data and ensures you’re starting entirely fresh. Expected result: you’re logged out after refreshing.
- Log in to BBC iPlayer. Expected result: you’re logged in successfully.
- Play a video and try a livestream. This ensures you have full access to the site. Expected result: content plays without any errors or streaming issues.
What our data shows
BBC iPlayer does not appear to be particularly adept at detecting VPNs. The vast majority of VPNs tested this quarter unblocked BBC iPlayer 100 percent of the time. Just two providers failed: Mullvad VPN and CyberGhost. However, even these succeeded in at least 15 percent of tests, so unblocking iPlayer is just a matter of persistence.

Examining our data reveals some interesting information. VPNs that work with several Tier-1 streaming services like Netflix or Disney+ are more likely to unblock BBC iPlayer. Accordingly, high Tier-1 failure rates correspond with high iPlayer failure rates.
On that note, it’s surprising that CyberGhost was the least reliable option. It’s the only VPN in this list with servers specifically optimized for accessing BBC iPlayer. We’ve noticed its unblocking success rates for various platforms falling in recent months. It’s possible explicitly naming streaming services backfired, forcing platforms to address an issue that may otherwise have been overlooked.
Price is not a reliable indicator of success either. Mullvad VPN (the second most-expensive service tested) was significantly less reliable than PureVPN (the least-expensive).
What to try if your VPN isn’t working with BBC iPlayer
- Verify your VPN is connected. This is easily overlooked, so it’s worth making sure.
- Ensure you’re using a British server. BBC iPlayer only works within the UK. If you’re unsure which location to choose, London is usually a safe bet.
- Try another UK server. If you’re still unable to stream anything, swap to a different server. The one you were using may simply have been blocked. You may want to try connecting to servers in different British cities too.
- Enable obfuscation features. If your VPN has a stealth mode or obfuscated protocol, try this now. It may help fully hide any indicators that you’re using a VPN.
- Turn off ad and tracker-blockers. Occasionally, your VPN’s ad and tracker-blocking features can cause problems with streaming sites. I’d suggest disabling any browser extensions with similar functionality for the same reason.

Will BBC iPlayer ban me for using a VPN?
BBC iPlayer forbids the use of VPNs in all circumstances, so it could choose to ban your account. The reality is that this is extremely unlikely, however. We’ve accessed BBC iPlayer over 300 times while connected to a VPN, with minimal problems. On the dozen or so occasions where the platform realized, we were simply shown an error, not banned.
Do I need a TV license to use BBC iPlayer?
Yes – BBC iPlayer has a special exception in the law that means you’ll need a TV license to use it in any capacity. Normally, a license is only required for watching live broadcasts. Despite this, the platform essentially works on the honor system and doesn’t actually verify license ownership.
Is BBC iPlayer the same thing as Britbox?
No: BBC iPlayer is a free, UK-only service that only shows content from BBC channels. BritBox is a paid subscription service, available in the US, Canada, Australia, and Nordic countries, which offers content from both the BBC and ITV.

Although you wrote this nearly a year ago, thank you for the list. PrivateVPN is equally the cheapest monthly and works for iPlayer still in October. Not every UK server works, but I’m happy to report that London 4 has been working for me for the new season of Doctor Who.
Used to use Tunnelbear to get my daily EastEnders fix in the US, but that no longer works. I don’t understand why they don’t make iPlayer available internationally by subscription, it would likely earn the BBC plenty of money, just saying.
Channel 4 and iTV are both readily accessible with almost any VPN if your need your fix of GBBO, Gogglebox or Hollyoaks.

Now I’m travelling across a few countries in Europe and Nordvpn works well most of the time for me. I’ve got some issues last year with connectivity, but not anymore, so overall it’s a good service.

TunnelBear no longer works in the US for BBC iplayer
express vpn has been having intermittent problems with iplayer since early april. At time of writing it’s not possible to access iplayer through any of the express vpm servers. I reckon the service has been unavailable more times than available these past six weeks.
